Elimination of single-use plastics
Following the ban on plastic bags, single-use plastic utensils,
glasses and straws, among others, will be prohibited starting at
the end of the month. Effective March 28, single-use products
that are used to package or consume food will also be banned.
Single-use plastics affected
The following items are prohibited: cups, glasses, plates,
containers, sticks, straws, and utensils for take-out or delivery.
All polystyrene (#6) and compostable (#7 PLA and PHA) plastic
items are forbidden. Carrying trays are also prohibited except for
those used for raw meat and fish. However, some organizations
are exempted:
• Non-profit food-aid organizations, e.g., charities that
distribute food or meals to vulnerable people;
• Establishments that offer only home delivery services.
Alternatives
In order to facilitate the transition, several practical tools are
available through the Guichet unique pour la transition
alimentaire (GUTA). This website offers directory of alternatives
to prohibited items, a guide to best practices and contact
information for several support organizations. A best practices
checklist can also be downloaded from the website:
